Start with the words
UFO means unidentified flying object. NASA uses UAP for unidentified anomalous phenomena: observations that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena with the available information. Both terms describe an identification problem. Neither word means alien.
Better questions need better data
NASA’s 2023 independent study focused on how to improve the scientific study of UAP. Its emphasis was on collecting useful data, applying scientific methods, and making reporting more systematic. Better measurements are more valuable than simply collecting more dramatic stories.
Read with curiosity and care
Ask who observed an event, when they recorded it, what the sensor measured, and whether the original material is available. Consider distance, perspective, weather, and the limits of a recording. You can take a witness seriously while leaving the cause uncertain. An honest “we don’t know” is a valid result.
